My Heart's Indelible Ves Mangalya✨️


 

As I reflect on my fifteen years immersed in the world of art, I'm eager to share an unforgettable memory that remains vividly etched in my heart. Having studied the fundamentals of the Kandyan dance tradition, along with various other dance forms like Sokari, Hath Adi, Hackma, and Shanthikarma, the precious moment when I wore the sacred Ves crown at the age of 14, guided by my teacher Bappa, stands as an eternal memory in my life.

Over time, I've had the opportunity to contribute to numerous Ves Mangalyas through dance and singing. However, the Ves Mangalya organized by Bappa for the children of the Helabodu Thuruliyamal Kalayathanaya in Pussallavinna holds a special place in my memory. This ceremony, conducted with traditional rituals on June 20, 2024, was executed with exceptional vibrancy.

We personally handled all the preparations, including setting up the 'aila' and decorations. On the night of June 19th, the 'Hangala Pe Kirima' rituals took place. That night, I and a group of talented fellow artists enriched the event with our dances. Skilled elders from the Bibile area, along with my grandfather, also participated in performing the rituals. It was a beautiful and unforgettable night.

Early on June 20th, the ritual of adorning the novice dancers with the Ves and head ornaments was performed, and the festival commenced at 8:30 AM. Venerable monks, including the Deputy Chief Incumbent of Sri Pada, and the indigenous leader, Wannila Aththo, graced the occasion as distinguished guests. The event was conducted with great respect and amidst a large and enthusiastic audience.

The ornate costumes of the Ves Mangalya, the enchantment of the dances, the rhythm of the drums, the sweetness of the singing, and the joyous reactions of the audience are all indelibly imprinted in my heart. The flickering light of the lamps during the 'Hangala Pe Kirima,' the fragrance of the flowers, and the devotion of the rituals still resonate within me. The scenic beauty of Pussallavinna and the splendor of the night sky added further charm to the occasion.

These beautiful memories remain forever in my life, providing immense strength to my artistic journey.
